Digitization tailored to the universe: the case of the ALMA observatory

Managing hundreds of thousands of documents in an international scientific environment is no small task. ALMA Observatory required a robust, flexible document solution aligned with its critical operation.

Together, we were able to design and implement a customized system that today supports global collaboration and the operational efficiency of one of the world's most important scientific infrastructures.

The Challenge

The previous document system had run its course. It didn't allow for traceability, hampered version control, and didn't adapt to new processes or remote collaboration between distributed scientific teams.

Our Contribution

A customized, scalable system aligned with ALMA's real-world workflows:

Platform built on Alfresco, supported by Hyland.

Digitalized and customized approval workflows by department, with traceability and version control.
Integration of OCR technology for intelligent searches and automated text extraction.

Results and value generated

1

Document processing

More than 100.000 documents cataloged and organized with metadata.
